Calculation rules

Gate valves

DN15 to DN200 uses the ISO equivalent area with a factor of 1.00. DN250 requires an entered complete or incomplete area.

Y-strainers and flanged joints

Use an external CAD or measured area. Select whether it includes the full hot bolt and flange geometry. Incomplete areas use a visible factor of 1.20.

Pipe sections

Pipe loss uses outside diameter and entered length. Flanged joints are excluded and must be added as separate rows.

Questions

What is included in the ISO valve area?

For manual flanged gate valves from DN15 to DN200, ISO 12241 Table A.3 provides an equivalent area that includes the body, flanges, bolts and stem. No additional bare-area allowance is applied.

When is the 20% area allowance used?

It is applied only when an entered or reference area excludes some hot bolts, flanges or other external surfaces. A complete CAD area uses a factor of 1.00.

How are Y-strainers calculated?

Use a complete CAD or measured external area. Existing DN25 and DN80 project references are available, but both are marked as incomplete and use the displayed 20% area allowance. Other sizes require an entered area.

Are flanged joints included in pipe length?

No. Pipe rows calculate the cylindrical pipe surface only. Add each flanged connection as a separate row.

How do I calculate heat loss from valves and piping?

Add each item as its own row: pick the type, set the nominal bore or the run length and the surface temperature, and give the quantity. Every row is solved separately and the table totals them.

Can I mix valves, strainers and pipe in one table?

Yes. Each row keeps its own type, size and temperature, so a line with valves, a strainer and a length of pipe totals in one go.

Why is there no payback figure?

Payback appears once you enter your own installed cost. No cost rate is published here.
