Valves on a hot-water circuit

Four jobs, and a valve is bad at any job it was not built for.

Valves on a circuit do one of four things. They isolate, they regulate, they stop flow going backwards, or they control pressure. Almost every valve problem in a plant room comes from one being asked to do a second job. A ball valve left half open to throttle, a gate valve used to balance. What follows is the four jobs and which body suits each.

Isolating

Fully open or fully shut

Ball valve

A bored sphere on a quarter turn. Fast, certain, and the lever shows the state from across the room. It is the default isolating valve up to the size where the ball becomes a lump of metal.

Gate valve

A wedge lifted clear of the flow over several turns. Slow to operate, which is the point on a large main where a quarter turn would slam the system. Fully open it obstructs almost nothing; part open it wears at the seat.

Butterfly valve

A disc that turns in the flow, held between flanges or wafer-mounted. Compact and cheap in the large sizes where ball and gate valves stop being sensible, with the disc permanently in the stream.

Setting a flow rate and keeping it

Globe valve

Flow turns through the body and past a plug onto a seat. That path is why it throttles well and why it costs more pressure drop than anything else here. It is a control valve, not an isolating valve.

Double regulating valve

A globe pattern with a memory stop: it can be closed for isolation and reopens to the setting it was commissioned at. That is the point of it - the balance survives someone shutting the branch.

Commissioning set

A double regulating valve with metering points either side, so flow can be measured while it is being set. It is what a balanced circuit is balanced with, and the tappings are the part that must stay reachable.

Non-return

One direction only

Two names, one device

A check valve and a non-return valve are the same thing. The trade uses both names and no distinction is intended by either.

Swing, spring and dual plate

A swing check has a hinged disc and needs mounting the right way up. A spring check closes before flow reverses and goes in any orientation. A dual-plate wafer check folds two half-discs and takes almost no length.

Where it matters

On the discharge of a pump in a duty-standby pair, so the standby pump is not driven backwards by the running one. Fitted the wrong way round it looks correct and blocks the circuit.

Pressure

Reducing and relieving

Pressure reducing valve

Holds a set downstream pressure regardless of what arrives at the inlet, by throttling against a spring and a diaphragm. It is adjusted against a gauge on the downstream side, and it is only as good as the strainer in front of it.

Relief and safety

A relief valve opens progressively as pressure rises above its setting and is what a water system uses. A safety valve pops fully open at its setting and belongs to compressible fluids - steam and gas. They are not interchangeable and the distinction is in what the fluid does as the valve starts to open.

Neither is adjusted to make a problem go away

A relief valve that keeps lifting is reporting something. Winding it up is removing the report, not the cause.

What a valve population changes

They are the small surfaces that add up

ISO 12241 gives an equivalent bare area per DN for a valve, and it already includes the flanges, bolting and stem. That area is far larger than the pipe the valve sits in. A run with many valves loses much more than its length suggests.

Every one of them is operated

Isolating valves get turned, commissioning sets get measured, relief valves get tested, strainers in front of reducing valves get cleaned. Fixed lagging over any of that survives until the first time it is needed.

And they are at head height

Manifolds sit where people reach. Insulated surfaces here are held under the same 45 °C touch-safe target used everywhere else on this site. We set that target against the burn thresholds in EN ISO 13732-1.

What is the difference between a check valve and a non-return valve?

Nothing. They are two names for the same device, and both are used across the trade with no distinction intended. What does differ is the pattern: swing, spring or dual plate. A swing check has to be mounted the right way up, and a spring check does not.

What is the difference between a gate valve and a globe valve?

A gate valve lifts a wedge clear of the flow. It is meant to be fully open or fully shut, and part open it wears at the seat. A globe valve turns the flow past a plug onto a seat. That path is what lets it throttle, and it also makes it the highest pressure drop on the circuit. Gate to isolate, globe to regulate.

What is a double regulating valve?

A globe-pattern valve with a memory stop. Close it completely to isolate a branch, then reopen it to exactly the setting it was commissioned at. Shutting the branch does not destroy the balance. With metering points either side it becomes a commissioning set, which is what the flow is measured through while it is being set.

What does a pressure reducing valve do?

It holds a chosen downstream pressure whatever arrives at the inlet, throttling against a spring and a diaphragm. It is set against a gauge on the downstream side. It is also sensitive to debris on its seat, so it is only as reliable as the strainer ahead of it.

What is the difference between a safety valve and a relief valve?

A relief valve opens progressively as pressure rises past its setting, which suits a liquid system. A safety valve pops fully open the moment it lifts, which is what a compressible fluid like steam or gas needs. They are not interchangeable. Neither should be wound up to stop it lifting. A valve that keeps lifting is reporting a fault, not causing one.

Which valve should I use to isolate a hot-water branch?

A ball valve in the ordinary sizes: quarter turn, positive, and the lever reports the state. A gate valve on a large main where a quarter turn would slam the system. A butterfly valve where the size makes a ball impractical. Not a globe valve - that is a regulating valve and it costs pressure drop every hour the system runs.
