Q: How do I check if mine is missing/failing?

Stack temperature: >200 °C on a gas boiler with no economizer (or a fouled one) = recoverable money.

Flue gas leaves a non-condensing boiler at 180–250 °C; an economizer recovers that heat into feedwater. Condensing economizers go further where return temperatures allow.

Mechanism & sizing

Rule of thumb: every 22 °C of flue-gas cooling ≈ 1% efficiency. Condensing variants add 5–10% more on gas where low-temp sinks exist (CIP water, makeup). Verify with stack temperature + O2 — both visible on the boiler panel today.

What does an economizer save?

Condensing or non-condensing?

Condensing needs a cold sink (<55 °C return) and acid-resistant surfaces — where you have one, it's the better project.
