An open-cycle (simple-cycle) gas turbine burns fuel to spin a turbine and exhausts the hot gas directly — with no heat-recovery steam generator. OCGT units start quickly and are used for peaking and grid balancing, at lower efficiency (~35-42%) than combined-cycle.
OCGT exhausts hot gas to the atmosphere; CCGT adds an HRSG and steam turbine to recover that heat, reaching ~60% efficiency.
