A heat-recovery steam generator (HRSG) is a large heat exchanger that captures hot exhaust from a gas turbine to raise steam for a steam turbine in a combined-cycle power plant. An HRSG carries expansion joints, headers, drums, valves and hot casing that operate at high temperature and benefit from removable insulation.
An HRSG recovers waste heat from a gas turbine's exhaust to generate steam, boosting a combined-cycle plant's efficiency to around 60%.
There are several thousand HRSGs in operation, one or more per gas turbine in every combined-cycle plant.
