PROFINET
PROFINET is an industrial Ethernet standard for real-time communication between controllers and field devices. Built on standard Ethernet, it supports deterministic data exchange, motion control, and integrated diagnostics, and is widely used in discrete and process automation, especially in Siemens-based architectures.
PROFINET layers real-time channels over standard Ethernet, providing cyclic data exchange for I/O and isochronous timing for demanding motion applications, while still allowing ordinary TCP/IP traffic on the same network. It includes device description files, automatic addressing, and rich diagnostics. PROFINET matters because it combines the bandwidth and ubiquity of Ethernet with the determinism factories require, enabling converged networks where automation, configuration, and monitoring data travel over a single infrastructure.
